A native of Youngstown, Ohio and graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelors degree in Marketing and a Masters in Business Administration. He began his career with Ryan Homes as a sales manager and then spent the next five years at Ford Motor Company as a Zone Manager and was promoted to Product Marketing Manager. He was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for a hotel management company with responsibility for over 20 hotels in the Southeast as well as a full-service, in-house advertising agency. He has over 15 years experience in hospitality marketing and management and has served on several advisory boards within the industry and provides consulting services for the lodging market.

As one of the principals of Gateway Hospitality, Sam and his partner Clancy Cipkala, founded Gateway Hospitality after many years of successful hotel management and marketing. The mainstays of Gateway Hospitality's success are both the acquisition and turnaround of distressed properties and development of new hotels. Since forming Gateway in 1995, they have successfully developed, acquired, and managed limited and full service hotels. In addition, they have provided management and marketing services for several other hotels on a contract basis. During this time, the hotels in their portfolio consistently outperformed their competitive set within the market.
